About Us
Who we are & what we do
For many South African gardeners, finding their perfect flower can be a challenge. Local nurseries tend to stock only a handful of cultivars and the search for something specific can mean weeks of “nursery-crawling” only to settle for whatever happens to be available. We exist to make this task a bit easier. Whether you simply want something pretty and low-maintenance to fill a gap in your garden, or an exact cultivar to complete your collection, we make it convenient to browse and buy plants online.
We are a mail-order nursery, meaning plants purchased from our online store are delivered to you. We offer an extensive selection of Daylilies (Hemerocallis), Bearded Irises (Iris x germanica), Canna Lilies (Canna) and Inca Lilies (Alstroemeria). Plants are supplied ‘bare-root’ (‘ex-ground’) – they are lifted from the soil, trimmed down, packaged and shipped via courier.
Browse our online catalogue, choose your favourites, and have them delivered to you.
Our Humble Roots
Zondervlei Flower Farm started as a hobby that got out of hand. It all began in 2002 with a single daylily (Hemerocallis ‘Kwanso’), the hobby quickly became a serious collection as we sourced and propagated more varieties. We learned early on that these perennials travel and establish well as bare-root stock, convenient to ship and ready to plant. That led to an online catalogue and the original trading name, Daylilies Online. The collection continued to grow and we branched out into other complimentary flowering perennials such as Bearded Irises, Cannas, and Inca Lilies.
Practical realities on our property, such our Highveld climate with summer heat, winter frost and the occasional drought, forced us to favour plants suited to local conditions, rather than forcing the local conditions to suit plants. Over the years, our collection has grown into one of the more diverse offerings available in South Africa, curated for both everyday gardeners and serious collectors.
The rebrand to Zondervlei Flower Farm reflects our waterwise roots, and our desire to grow beyond a single plant group.
We measure success in the small, meaningful moments our plants create: a first bloom opening at sunrise after a rainy night, bees and butterflies feeding in abundance, a gardener’s delight at finally finding the cultivar they’ve sought for years. These are the rewards we hope to share with you — season after season.
